What is Fiery Towel Massage?

What is Fiery Towel Massage?

One of the most unique massage procedures of which you will ever hear is the fiery towel massage.

The patient lies down on a table, and the MT covers whatever area of the body they want worked with plastic wrap and a thick towel and proceeds to soak the towel in alcohol. The MT will then light the patient on fire.

In an article recently published by Reuters entitled, “Egyptian masseur plays with fire to ease muscle pain,” Abdel Rehim Saeid, 35, says that he applies the ancient Pharaonic technique, known as the "fiery towel" by starting with a standard massage, using oil and chamomile, to stimulate blood circulation and alleviate some of the pain in affected areas.

Then comes the heat.

Saeid places several layers of towels and other isolating materials on the client's back. Then a towel soaked in alcohol is placed on top and set on fire. It burns for roughly a minute before the flames are put out with a wet towel.

This type of massage is definitely not for everyone. While the therapists do not intentionally cause pain, Saeid says the flames are, as you can imagine, hot.
