Massage Therapy & Kinesiology Taping

Kinesiology taping and massage therapy

Kinesiology taping has been around for more than 35 years. Chiropractors, physical therapists, athletic trainers and massage therapists have used it for decades, and for many good reasons—all of which apply to the realm of massage therapy.

Increasingly, massage therapists are using kinesiology taping methods to bring the same benefits that athletes have enjoyed for years to their patients.

Kinesiology tape has been shown to reduce pain; positively affect fluid mechanics; improve posture and muscle function; speed recovery; and improve sporting performance.

Taping can also be used to assist the body’s natural healing processes and helps to extend the benefits of massage therapy after the session has ended.

How does kinesiology taping work?

When the tape is applied to the body, it recoils slightly, gently lifting the skin. It is believed that this helps to create a microscopic space between your skin and the tissues underneath it. Your skin, connective tissue, fascia, muscles contain sensory receptors that feel pain, temperature, and touch.

Kinesiology taping creates a lift that unloads the underlying tissues. Decompressing those tissues can change the signals going to the brain. When the brain receives a different signal, it’s going to respond differently.

Types of tape? Brands?

Not all tape is the same. There are many brands: RockTape, Spider Tech, and Kinesio Tape, among others, and a few schools of thought on how to apply it. The evolution of application and successful client outcomes have led to a more global and more effective method of taping.
