A face massage can be one of the most relaxing and pleasurable experiences for most of us. We usually don't realize how much of stress and tension builds up in our faces. Most of our facial expressions, most notably frowning, requires or implies muscle action. In an aromatherapy facial massage, the desired outcome may focus initially on skin conditions, but a superficial effect is never the whole story when working on the face with essential oils.
In a recently published article entitled, “This is How Aromatherapy Will Improve Your Facial Massage,” author and expert, Corollane Crichton, writes:
“Aromatherapy involves the skillful application of essential oils to support a desired outcome. While the blend you make may take care of the skin, it may also help regulate endocrine or nervous system functions, reduce irritations in the mind and stimulate the body’s own innate healing tendencies,” adding that essential oils are natural compounds produced by steam distillation of plant materials; no chemical preservatives, synthetic fragrances, harmful or toxic substances are added.
“Essential oils are micronized particles of the plant’s properties,” she writes.
It was Marguerite Maury that introduced the idea of a massage application of essential oils in the 1960s. In this method, the practitioner (whether an aromatherapist or a massage therapist) administers essential oils to treat the patient by direct application to the skin specifically through massage oils rather than through sprays or salt baths.
Using essential oils in this muscle manipulation process introduces the influence of aromas (aromatherapy) in the pampering and treatment system, thus turning an ordinary massage into an aromatherapy massage.
