Therapeutic massage may relieve pain in several ways
When it comes to back pain, massage can help to relieve the severe pain one might endure — in more ways than you might think.
“It may relax painful muscles, tendons and joints, or relieve stress and anxiety. It may even change the way the brain processes pain signals,” writes Dr. Anthony L. Komaroff in an article for Tulsa World.
Massage therapy can also involve varying degrees of pressure
Your massage technique should depend on you level of back pain. Dr. Komaroff suggests that you tell your therapist where the pain resides and how deep it runs so that they might augment their practise to suit you.
“Massage doesn’t have to be painful to be therapeutic, so be sure to tell your therapist what type of touch you prefer (light touch, firm pressure, hard pressure),” writes Komaroff.
Massage should not be the only treatment you use for back pain
Dr. Komaroff suggests that massage therapy should work in tandem with other means of treatment including pain relievers, and physical activity.
“Instead, use massage in addition to standard care. That includes taking anti-inflammatory pain relievers, staying as active as possible, getting physical therapy and giving your body time to heal. When added to the mix, massage can reduce pain and speed your return to normal activities,” writes Komaroff.
