Questioning and testing long-held beliefs and assumptions in massage therapy helps advance the massage therapy field.
Research, in any given field, is crucial for advancing techniques and performance methodologies. But research cannot be conducted without the proper funding, and that’s where the Massage Therapy Research Fund (MTRF) comes in.
The MTRF was established in 2004, with initial contributions from the Registered Massage Therapists Association of Ontario, the Massage Therapy Association of British Columbia, individual Massage Therapists and the public.
In a recently published article entitled, “Apply for a Massage Research Grant and Advance Your Profession,” author and expert, MK Brennan, writes:
“Let’s say you have a question or an idea and you want to test it through a massage research project. That was me in 2002 as I studied for my master’s degree. Already practicing as a massage therapist for over a decade and as a nurse for twice that amount of time, I pondered the impact of massage on the stress levels that nurses face in a hospital setting.”
Brennan writes that her thesis project started to take shape and the Massage Therapy Foundation (MTF), the massage field’s dedicated massage research foundation played a significant role in its creation through the Research Grant Program.
“I was fortunate to be the recipient of a grant and was able to complete a research project that involved 82 bedside nurses,” she writes.
Eligible research topics include, but are not limited to:
Massage Therapy effectiveness, efficacy and safety
Massage Therapy competencies and competency assessment
Access to and delivery of Massage Therapy services
Professionalization of Massage Therapy
Evaluation of Massage Therapy practice
